Destination Canada celebrates one million uses of its hashtag on Instagram

Vancouver, BC, January 11, 2016: Destination Canada is sending a big shout out to everyone in their Instagram community who has shared images tagged with #ExploreCanada. Sunday evening the hashtag surpassed one million uses since the @ExploreCanada account launched on Instagram in June 29, 2011.
To celebrate this “one million” milestone, Destination Canada released a video on Instagram today, thanking the many contributors to the #ExploreCanada community.
Unfiltered and authentic, #ExploreCanada’s Instagram feed is exclusively user generated and promotes Canada in its four seasons with spectacular wildlife, local people, architecture, urban and wilderness images. It celebrates the places that resonate most with travellers to Canada by including everything from historical cities, to the Rocky Mountains to waterfront destinations across the country.
“There is an estimated 74 million uses of #travel images on Instagram, and there is no denying its power as a travel motivator,” says Jon Mamela, Chief Marketing Officer, Destination Canada. “We are thrilled experiencing Canada inspired people to share their #ExploreCanada images over a million times. Travellers influencing other travellers to keep exploring all we have to offer as a destination is fantastic for Canada.”
Since its purchase by Facebook in 2012, Instagram now boasts the largest public reach of any visual social network, with 400 million active users. Seventy-six per cent of Instagram users are under 34 years of age, making this an ideal platform to engage millennials, an important and growing market for Destination Canada. “Our goal is to inspire even more people to visit Canada, and our engaged Instagram community plays a large part in helping us to achieve this goal,” said Mamela.
