Canadian Tourism Commission mints Canada's newest millionaire

Vancouver, BC, September 10, 2009 – What better way to make this summer season even more memorable than by becoming Canada’s newest millionaire! With one million Aeroplan® Miles at his disposal, that’s just how Tyler Wilson feels after having won the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s LOCALS KNOW contest sponsored by Aeroplan.

“I was really surprised when I got the call from Aeroplan telling me I’d won,” said Tyler Wilson, winner of the randomly drawn LOCALS KNOW contest sponsored by Aeroplan. “Through work I’ve seen a lot of the Gulf Islands in BC, so I definitely want to see the other side of the country. The Maritimes are high on my list of places to visit. I’m excited to see another Canadian coast!”

One million Aeroplan Miles could fly you from Vancouver to Halifax a staggering 40 times, or 66 times from Toronto to Montréal if you’re so inclined—the choice will be Tyler’s but we’re hoping he’ll keep exploring Canada! Tyler’s photo of the Gulf Islands in BC was just the right ticket when it was randomly drawn by Aeroplan.

“We are very pleased with the response to our summer campaign. The LOCALS KNOW campaign is a great opportunity to highlight what makes Canada special beyond our traditional icons,” said Gisèle Danis, CTC’s executive director Strategic Marketing, Canada Program. “Moreover, the Canadian travel industry has come together to offer some vacation deals so I encourage everyone to visit to take advantage of them.”

The LOCALS KNOW campaign encourages Canadians to log onto and upload a photo of their favourite “unknown” Canadian destination. Designed to inspire Canadians to see undiscovered areas of the country, Canadians were invited to enter to win one million Aeroplan Miles before the contest’s deadline of Jul. 31, 2009. So far, over 4,000 favourite travel spots have been uploaded.

"Aeroplan was thrilled to partner with the Canadian Tourism Commission on this exciting and very successful campaign," said Sylvie Bourget, senior vice president, Marketing and eBusiness, Aeroplan. "“Canada offers the greatest travel experiences. Canadians will be able to create their own unique memories about our country."

LOCALS KNOW, a national, integrated advertising campaign (print, magazine, TV and online), was launched by the CTC and Canada’s tourism industry on Jun. 1, 2009. The campaign has been made possible by special stimulus funding from the Government of Canada. The CTC is investing $10 million per year in the next two fiscal years to support the tourism industry and stimulate Canada’s economy.

Canadians who missed out on the million Aeroplan Miles prize still have time to take part in the LOCALS KNOW campaign. Visitors to will have another opportunity to win more great prizes until Sept. 22, 2009, by taking the LOCALS KNOW quiz, sponsored by, CanWest’s online news and information destination, for a chance to win one of six prizes of 250,000 Aeroplan Miles.
