Travel Trade Specialist


Destination Canada needs a Travel Trade Specialist to work with the travel trade channel in China, and support the Travel Trade Manager in various trade activities that will generate increased conversion and visitation to Canada. The successful candidate will possess the ability to form strong partnerships within the Chinese travel industry and assist with the development of travel trade training and marketing programs. Position Title: Travel Trade Specialist

Language Requirements: Fully fluent in spoken and written English and Mandarin

Duties: Working under the direction of the Managing Director, China and the Travel Trade Manager, key responsibilities include:

  • Support Travel Trade Manager with the implementation and monitoring of promotional projects and co-operative marketing programs to support and promote Destination Canada’s strategic and tactical plans in China. The Travel Trade Specialist will provide key messages/images to the trade partners for incorporation, proof the draft creative and send for approval to the Travel Trade Manager. The Trade Specialist will also collect all final creative and track performance against targets from trade partners.
  • Assist Travel Trade Manager with the organization of trade shows and events in China and Canada. The Trade Specialist will coordinate logistics, event planning, air transportation, hotel accommodation and other activities as required.
  • Monitoring of annual trade development budgets including monthly and quarterly reviews and forecasts.
  • Develop, maintain and enhance a database of travel trade contacts across China through various digital platforms.
  • The coordination of Canadian itineraries and products from key account agencies for inclusion as a call to action in various digital and video streaming channels linked to Destination Canada content marketing strategy.
  • Review and update all relevant content in the Canada Specialist Program/CSP hosted on the WeChat platform. Liaise with key accounts and other agents to ensure maximum participation in this training program.
  • Recommend content and stories for monthly inclusion in Destination Canada Travel Trade Corporate WeChat account. Coordinate with key PMO/DMO partners for content inclusion.
  • Coordinate brochure content and advertising opportunities with partners and suppliers. Facilitate brochure and other trade related promotional material distribution to agents across China.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret and disseminate trade market information and trends to Travel Trade Manager on a regular basis to support trade planning and program development.
  • Other duties as assigned by the MD China and Travel Trade Manager in connection with overall travel trade activities.


Education: Undergraduate degree in marketing and/or tourism, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:  When applying, the candidate must clearly demonstrate in writing how they meet the following experience criteria:

  • At least 3 years of job-related experience
  • Hands-on trade marketing experience
  • Travel industry experience in China

Knowledge :

  • In-depth knowledge of travel industry marketing and promotional activities.
  • Extensive industry knowledge
  • Knowledge of travel related industries
  • Knowledge and understanding of digital marketing and digital services.
  • Knowledge of software packages (Microsoft suite)


  • Communication: Excellent writing skills – Mandarin and English – in order to create complex and/or highly public documents and presentations, as well as accurate contracts. Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills. Ability to interact effectively with people and partners from various cultures. 
  • Innovation and creativity: Strong analytical skills for the interpretation of data with the ability to gather and analyze statistical and competitive information. Creative and innovative outlook to problematic situations with the skills to identify and create new business opportunities within a fast changing digital environment.
  • Planning and organizing: Very advanced planning and organizational skills to enable the execution of action plans resulting from the strategic direction of the office and as designated by Managing Director, China and Travel Trade Manager.
  • Leadership/ Teamwork: Effectively manage a complex network of partnerships and relationships with tourism industry and related public/ private sector agencies.

Personal Suitability: Effective interpersonal relationships; creativity; judgment; results-oriented; discretion; confidentiality; diplomacy; detail-oriented.
Security:  A Reliability Status or a Security Clearance may be required.
