Business Development Manager

Destination Canada (DC) needs a Business Development Manager to support business development activities for Alberta in the China market. Reporting to the Managing Director, China, and the Senior Business Development Manager, Travel Alberta, the successful candidate will represent Travel Alberta at tradeshows and industry events and maintain strong relationships with key travel trade accounts, industry organizations, partners, and government stakeholders.

Position Title: Business Development Manager

Language Requirements: Fully fluent in spoken and written Mandarin and English

Duties: The Business Development Manager, based in China, supports business development activities for Travel Alberta in China that deliver on defined performance targets.

The Business Development Manager is responsible for delivering on Travel Alberta’s strategic objectives by:

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key airline partners, travel trade, Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events (MICE) organizations and education segments within China.
  • Supporting the development of existing and new markets within China by growing distribution of Alberta’s experience offerings through third-party operators.
  • Identifying new business opportunities, negotiating and closing joint marketing agreements that strengthen Alberta’s competitive position in China.
  • Providing regular training to targeted accounts to broaden Alberta’s sales force in China and strengthen advocacy for Alberta as a travel destination.
  • Upholding a high-level knowledge of current market conditions that will increase Alberta’s market share, visitation and revenue from China.

The Business Development Manager reports daily to the Senior Business Development Manager based in China, and reports regularly to the Business Development Director, Asia based in Travel Alberta’s Head Office in Calgary, Alberta.


Education: Undergraduate degree in marketing and/or Tourism or a suitable combination of education and work experience.

Experience: When applying, the candidate must clearly demonstrate in writing how they meet the following experience criteria:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience of the China travel industry
  • Hands on experience in dealing with Chinese travel agents, MICE operators, airlines and tour operators
  • Experience working with partners and stakeholders in leading and coordinating projects and joint ventures


  • In depth knowledge of travel agents and tour operators operations with particular emphasis on the independent leisure market and MICE segments of the China travel industry
  • Understanding of negotiating and implementing airline cooperative and marketing MOUs
  • Understanding of travel related industries
  • Negotiation skills
  • Analytical skills for the interpretation of data
  • Knowledge of Canadian tourism products, Provinces and Regions (Particularly Alberta)
  • Knowledge of Chinese marketing trends, business practices and business models
  • Knowledge of Software packages (Microsoft Suite)


  • Self- starter with  strong leadership skills with high level of motivation and innovative thinking
  • Ability to provide creative and successful contributions to expanding Canada’s influence in the market in conjunction the DC team and in market Provincial Partners
  • Strong communicator in English and Mandarin
  • Ability to think strategically and develop programs from concept to execution
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Team player working with DC China group, and Provincial Partner Marketing Managers co located in DC - China office and Canadian stakeholders and partners
  • Ability to track results, assign targets and determine ROI

Security: A Reliability Status or a Security Clearance may be required.
