September 2013: the numbers that count for Canada travel.

Despite another powerful surge from China, the international traveller total fell 2%, according to latest CTC Tourism Snapshot.

After an august August for international travel to Canada, it was a more subdued September. As kids went back to school across the country, Canadians welcomed just over 1.6 million international visitors, a 2% drop on 2012, reports the newly minted Tourism Snapshot from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’sResearch department.

More key statistics:

  • The US market slammed on the brakes in September. A 7% increase in air travel could not offset a 9% fall in auto arrivals, leading to an overall 5% year-on-year decrease in American travellers.
  • Americans have enjoyed 9.8 million overnighters in Canada in the first nine months of 2013, up 1% on last year.
  • The China market seems to know nothing but double-digit growth. A stellar September saw a 34% surge in Chinese consumers heading east over the Pacific to Canada.
  • Significantly increased air capacity remains a tremendous boon for the South Korea market, which posted a strong 21% gain in travellers coming to Canada in September 2013. Ontario was the biggest beneficiary, with a 49% boost over September 2012 in South Koreans choosing that province.
  • CTC’s Latin American markets had a September to savour, with both Brazil (9%) and Mexico (5%) registering year-on-year gains in traveller numbers to Canada.
  • The Eurozone painted a more troubled picture in September 2013: only France (1%) saw more consumers choose Canada for a vacation, with trip numbers declining in the UK (-3%) and Germany (-2%).
  • The Australia market experienced a small dip in September 2013, too, with a 2% year-on-year drop in travellers hopping across to Canada.
  • Outside CTC’s key international markets, arrivals soared from Taiwan (38%) and Hong Kong (2%) in September 2013, but tumbled from Spain (-7%), Italy (-4%), the Netherlands (-2%) and Switzerland (-1%).
  • Hearth and home had a stronger pull for Canadians in September 2013 as they took 2.6 million trips abroad, a 1% year-on-year decline.
  • Canadian outbound travel grew 2% in the first three quarters of 2013, totally nearly 26 million trips.
  • A sanguine outlook on job prospects and personal finances helped push the Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada,up 6.2 points to 91 in September 2013.
  • Americans needed time to ponder in September 2013. The Conference BoardConsumer Confidence Index dipped to 79.7 points, a 1.8-point drop.
