April 2014: the movers and shakers behind Canada’s vital travel statistics.

The late Easter provided a huge surge in visitor numbers to Canada, according to latest CTC Tourism Snapshot.

The Easter bunny smiled on the Great White North in April 2014. Just over one million international travellers made Canada their destination of choice, a 12% increase over the previous year, reports the latest Tourism Snapshot from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.

More facts and figures:

  • Americans took to the skies and roads, up 8% and 13% respectively, to sate their desire for Canadian travel experiences in April 2014. The overall total topped 713,000, a 10% surge over the same month in 2013.
  • However, year-to-date April 2014, the US market has dipped 1% to 2.3 million overnighters.
  • The Mexico market bounced back in style in April 2014, registering a 37% increase in travellers to Canada over the previous year.
  • The feel-good factor continued further south in Latin America, with the Brazil market seeing a 10% year-on-year rise.
  • There was a hat-trick of good news items from CTC’s European markets: Germany led the way with a massive 31% surge in visitors flying west to Canada, followed by theUK (23%) and France (1%).
  • Increased air capacity from Haneda and Narita airports helped fuel a powerful 18% year-on-year rise in Japanese travellers coming to Canada in April 2014.
  • Elsewhere in CTC’s Asian markets, there were strong increases in traveller numbers from the China (21%), South Korea (21%) and India (19%) over April 2013.
  • Outside CTC’s key international markets, visitor numbers to Canada surged ahead from Switzerland (31%), Italy (19%), Spain (12%), Hong Kong (4%) and Taiwan (0.4%). The Netherlands (down 6%) was the only one of this select group to show a decline.
  • Canadians were in vacation mode in April 2014, taking just over three million outbound trips, a 3% increase over 2013.
  • Year-to-date April 2014, Canadians have taken 11.6 million outbound trips, a 1% year-on-year gain.
  • Canadians stayed optimistic over financial prospects in April 2014. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, climbed 1.3 points to 89.8, a fourth consecutive monthly rise.  
  • There were a few seeds of doubt in American minds in April 2014. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index dipped 1.6 points to 82.3.
