November 2013: the numbers that counted for travel to Canada.

International arrivals total surged past 800,000, driven by strong performances in the US, Mexico and Germany, according to new CTC Tourism Snapshot.

Softly, softly, catchee traveller: increasing numbers of international consumers are inking Canada into their plans. The data from November 2013 continued that trend with 819,000 visitors—a 4% rise over 2012—coming to the Great White North, reports the latest number-crunching Tourism Snapshot from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.

More data hot spots:

  • Vroom! Driven by a surge in both air (5%) and auto travel (3%), US residents made 616,000 trips to Canada in November 2013, a robust 3% year-on-year gain.
  • Americans enjoyed 11.3 million overnighters across their northern border to Canada in the first 11 months of 2013, up 1% on the previous year.
  • Dial M for Mexico: the Mexico market led the charge in November 2013, registering a 25% acceleration in travellers to Canada.
  • In contrast, the Brazil market suffered a 29% year-on-year decline in travellers to Canada in November 2013. The drop in visitors is due to the contrast with November 2012’s remarkable 65% increase. However, the November 2013 arrivals total is still 17% higher than two years ago.
  • Lufthansa’s increased capacity on its services from Frankfurt to Toronto, ON, and Vancouver, BC, boosted arrivals to Canada from the Germany market by 17% in November 2013.
  • CTC’s other European markets were split down the middle in November 2013: the UK delighted in seeing a 2% increase in visitors to Canada, but, across the English Channel, France dipped 2%.
  • The Australia market kept its sunny disposition with a 10% increase in visitors to Canada in November 2013.
  • The China market looked back to its old self November 2013, seeing 17% more consumers cross the Pacific for a Canadian vacation.
  • Things are heating up in the India market, too, which posted a 17% year-on-year rise in travellers to Canada.
  • Mixed news from outside CTC’s key international markets: arrival numbers to Canada rose from Hong Kong (17%), Spain (13%), Taiwan (10%) and Italy (4%), but the Netherlands (-0.3%) and Switzerland (-0.2%) both had mini slumps.
  • Canadians made 2.3 million outbound trips in November 2013, a 1% year-on-year rise. The increase was driven by overseas travel (650,000 trips, up 8%), while trips to the US fell 1% to 1.6 million.
  • Total Canadian outbound travel in the first 11 months of 2013 notched 30.6 million trips, up 2% over 2012.
  • Apprehension over personal finance and big-ticket items kept Canadians uneasy in November 2013. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada,slipped 1.8 points down the ladder to 87.1.
  • American optimism continued to dwindle in November 2013. The Conference BoardConsumer Confidence Index took another two-point tumble, down to 70.4.
