August 2015: understanding the who, what, when and how of travel to Canada.

The first eight months of 2015 saw a 7% rise in visitors to Canada from DC’s 11 international markets, according to new Tourism Snapshot.

The mercury rose, but visitor numbers stayed cool in August 2015. The latest Tourism Snapshot from Destination Canada (DC)’s Research department reveals that Canada welcomed 2.6 million happy international travellers, a slight 0.5% decline over the previous year.

Here’s some more key data:

  • In the first eight months of 2015, Canada laid out the welcome mat to 12.6 million international travellers, a 7% year-on-year rise.
  • A favourable exchange rate is encouraging South Korean consumers to reach for the skies and travel to Canada, with visitor numbers rising an impressive 14% in August 2015.
  • The CAN+ Visa program continues to stimulate interest and growth in the India market, with arrivals to Canada climbing 5% in August 2015.
  • The Japan market maintained its upward momentum in August 2015, registering a 5% uptick in visitors crossing the Pacific to Canada.
  • Australians can’t get enough of Canadian summertime, with 7% more Aussies flocking to a Canadian vacation in August 2015.
  • The US market hit the brakes in August 2015, largely due to a 4% drop in auto arrivals. In total, 1.9 million Americans took a Canadian overnighter, a 1% decline over August 2014.
  • Year-to-date August 2015, 8.9 million Americans have taken a trip to Canada, a substantial 7% rise over 2014.
  • DC’s European markets had mixed results in August 2015: arrivals to Canada rose from the UK (3%) and France (0.4%), but fell from Germany (-7%).
  • Elsewhere, most of DC’s secondarymarkets had a warm glow in August 2015. Arrivals increased from Spain (15%), the Netherlands (11%), Hong Kong (9%) and Taiwan (7%) but declined from Switzerland (-4%) and Italy (-2%).
  • Canadians liked their home comforts in August 2015, taking 3.5 million overnight trips to international destinations, a sharp 11% decline.
  • In the first eight months of 2015, Canadian trips to the US have dwindled 9% over the previous year.
  • As the economy slowed down in August 2015, Canadians became more anxious over their future prospects. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, fell 6.7 points to 91.9.    
  • Sunny summer skies helped lift the mood for Americans. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Indexsoared 10.3 points to 101.3 in August 2015.
