August 2013: summer put a smile on the face of Canada travel.

Increasing numbers of international travellers made Canada their destination of choice, says latest CTC Tourism Snapshot.

This could be the start of a beautiful friendship. Just under 2.6 million international travellers kindled their passion for Canada in August 2013, a 5% year-on-year surge, according to the latest sizzling summer Tourism Snapshot from the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s Research department.

More key facts and figures:

  • Astonishing growth in traveller numbers saw the China market post a 37% increase in consumers choosing Canada in August 2013.
  • The sky’s the limit: thanks to significantly increased air capacity, both the Japan and South Korea markets saw a healthy rise in Canada arrivals, 8% and 6% respectively, in August 2013.
  • The now-resolved dispute at Canadian visa offices may have delayed some travel plans from July to August, leading to strong gains in the Mexico (9%), Brazil (8%)and India (7%) markets.
  • Our American cousins can’t get enough of what Canada has to offer: an 8% turbocharge in air arrivals and 3% boost to auto arrivals took the visitor total in August 2013 to just over 1.9 million, up 4% on the previous year.
  • The US market has stayed buoyant through 2013: nine million Americans have enjoyed Canadian overnighters in the first eight months, a 2% year-on-year increase.
  • The Euro-zone had a spring in its step in August 2013: traveller numbers heading to Canada climbed in the France (10%), UK (9%) and Germany (4%) markets.
  • Arrival numbers were in the stratosphere in the Australia market, too, which saw a 12% surge in travellers crossing the Pacific Ocean to Canada in August 2013.
  • Looking beyond CTC’s key international markets, arrivals declined in August 2013 from Italy and the Netherlands (both -6%), Spain (-4%) and Switzerland (-2%), but climbed from Taiwan (28%) and Hong Kong (8%).
  • Canadians put their wandering shoes on again in August 2013, taking just under 3.9 million trips abroad, a 3% year-on-year increase.
  • During the first eight months of 2013, Canadian outbound travel showed few signs of slowing its upward trajectory, registering a total just shy of 23.4 million trips, up 3% on 2012.
  • Good vibes around current and future finances helped push the Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, up 2.2 points to 84.7 in August 2013.
  • The lazy, hazy days of summer kept American opinions rock steady in August 2013. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index rose slightly to 81.5, up 0.5 points.
