April 2015: analyzing the statistics on travel to Canada.

Despite a dip in some markets caused by an early Easter, year-to-date figures show sustained growth in international visitors, says new Tourism Snapshot.

Sometimes you have to dig into the numbers to get the whole picture. Despite a fluctuation in some markets caused by an earlier Easter holiday, the latest Tourism Snapshot from Destination Canada (DC)’s Research department, shows that more than 3.3 million international travellers came to Canada in the first four months of 2015, a 6% rise on the previous year.

  • In April 2015, just over one million international travellers crossed Canada’s borders, a 4% year-on-year rise.
  • High fives for the US market in April 2015: growth in arrivals across the transport spectrum resulted in an overall 6% increase in visitors to Canada, a fifth consecutive monthly rise.
  • In the first four months of 2015, 2.3 million Americans have taken Canadian overnighters, up 6% on 2014.
  • Growth continues apace in the China market, which clocked another impressive 18% year-on-year rise in visitor numbers to Canada in April 2015.
  • The CAN+ Visa program is yielding strong dividends in the India: in April 2015, this market registered a 10% rise in travellers to Canada.
  • Increased air capacity between Seoul and Vancouver is giving a lift to arrivals from South Korea, which posted a 9% increase in April 2015.
  • The early Easter holiday affected DC’s European markets, with arrivals to Canada dropping from Germany (-23%), the UK (-7%) and France (-2%).
  • Year-to-date April 2015, the Mexico market has enjoyed a 14% uptick in visitor numbers to Canada, despite the 2% drop in April 2015 caused by the earlier Easter holiday.
  • Easter taking place in early April also made its presence felt in DC’s secondarymarkets. Arrivals increased from Taiwan (37%) and Italy (+3%), but dropped from Switzerland (-12%), Spain (-2%), Hong Kong (-2%) and the Netherlands (-0.5%).
  • Canadians took just over three million trips abroad in April 2015, a minor 0.8% fall over the previous year.
  • In the first four months of 2015, Canadians have taken 8% more trips overseas than in 2014.
  • A slowing economy caused Canadians to have second thoughts in April 2015. The Index of Consumer Confidence, released by The Conference Board of Canada, sank 13.6 points to 94.7.  
  • A similar unease also gripped Americans. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell 7.1 points to 94.3 in April 2015.
