CTC’s annual conference delivers inspirational story ideas from across the country and builds key media contacts.
Have stories, will travel. For every great travel experience, there’s at least a dozen great tales to tell. GoMedia Canada Marketplace is the Canadian tourism industry’s opportunity to share those compelling stories with international media to inspire future travellers.
The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC)’s premier travel-media conference marked its 10th anniversary with a slice of island life this year in Charlottetown, PEI. One hundred and twenty-one media reps, comprising bloggers, photographers, writers, broadcasters and editors from CTC’s key international markets, joined 161 Canadian travel folks at the Delta Prince Edward hotel for four days of ideas and networking.
Attending media also had opportunities to immerse themselves more deeply in Prince Edward Island and Canada at large. Tourism Prince Edward Island and its partners provided nine full-day tours around the island on day one, ranging from golf to kayaking to lobster fishing. There were also 15 pre- and post-event FAM trips in different regions of Canada.
CTV’s “Canada AM Live” breakfast show joined the party with a broadcast Sept. 11. Filmed at Peake’s Quay, host Jeff Hutcheson put tourism-industry and media attendees through a series of fun challenges: oyster shucking, portaging a canoe, snowshoeing and dung tossing.
Industry attendees kicked off their #GoMedia13 with two in-depth educational sessions. The first focused on handling an unexpected crisis, such as the one Alberta managed this past summer on the flooding of the Bow River. Measurement maven Katie Delahaye Paine led the second session, which covered the latest updates in PR research and evaluation.
GoMedia still played to its core value for attendees—four sessions of one-to-one appointments where industry and media could brief each other in depth—but there were also more relaxed networking events. The Acadian Frolic gave a taste of a unique Canadian celebration and way of life while a beach party let attendees warm their toes in the sand and roast marshmallows around a bonfire. They all led up to the marketplace’s grand finale, the 2013 GoMedia awards and dinner.
“We launched an online idea-sharing platform for tourism partners and media to help them develop those vital business relationships,” says Ernst Flach, CTC executive director, Global Communications. “The platform enabled them to connect before the event, discover mutual areas of interest and share story ideas.”
