Storytelling takes centre stage at Explore Canada Media Awards.

DC kudos for media and industry for the best in Canadian tales around culture, wildlife, food and city experiences plus industry campaigns.

30 September 2015

Canada was dish of the day at the 2015 Explore Canada awards at GoMedia Canada at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre. The coveted awards are a staple of Destination Canada’s annual premier media event, where Canadian and international media meet with reps from provincial, territorial and destination  organizations, as well as from attractions, hotels and small- to medium-size businesses.

The 2015 Awards took place in BC’s wine country Sept. 30, the last day of the marketplace, and formed part of a luncheon sponsored by Tourism Kamloops and Tourism Sun Peaks.

Let’s meet the winners:

Local Culture Award
Remy Scalza, Canadian Geographic Travel
Meet Me at the Rodeo
In judging, Keith Henry, Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia Chief Executive Officer, noted: “The story was exciting and enticing and I felt strongly that there was authenticity to the history of the area and connection to the authentic story of Canada.”

Culinary Award
Amy Rosen, Food Arts
A High Way with Byways
Judge Michael Smith, renowned chef and Food Network host, delighted in this Newfoundland story. “Rosen’s words bring this unique destination to life as she grabs the reader with the promise of discovery and delivers a sense of wonder that looks good on all of Canada,” Smith noted. “Her prose evokes time and place, leaves us wanting to know more and with an urge to travel!”

Urban Experiences Award
Margo Pfeiff, San Francisco Chronicle
A City Woven From 4 Threads
Godfrey Gao, Taiwanese-born Canadian model and actor, enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stories in judging this winner: “The story provided a strong sense of place and history that successfully conveys the European flavour of Montréal,” noted Gao. “Overall, the piece is a great balance of urban experiences for the modern independent traveller, covering cultural and culinary interests.”

Outdoor Adventure Award
Bernhard Krieger, Ski Kanada
In judging, Tom Duguid, Arc’teryx creative director, was delighted by the compelling imagery from this winner. “Presentation is always key to a great website, and Ski Kanada capably presents a hierarchy of compelling imagery and written content,” noted Duguid. “However, it’s not just the images and headlines that are so cleanly displayed, but the vast range of interests, subjects and narratives that are attractively uncovered, luring the reader to discover more of Canadian winter sports.”

Wildlife Award
Brandy Yanchyk, BBC World News
The Polar Bear Capital of the World
Judge Wade Luzny, Canadian Wildlife Federation CEO and executive vice-president, centred his final selection around the important role tourism will have in the development of northern Canada. “It was what Brandy reported and who she engaged,” noted Luzny. “There is a lot we can learn from the people of the North and how to live in harmony with nature and adapt our ways.”

Most Innovative PR Campaign Award
Outside the Cube, for Travel Yukon
Yukon Generated Content Project
In judging, Arlene Dickinson, Venture Communications and District Ventures CEO, enjoyed this campaign’s spirit of collaboration. “The campaign did a great job of engaging community in many ways in addition to accomplishing its tourism goals,” noted Dickinson. “The need for authenticity was accomplished by accessing residents as the ambassadors of why to visit."

Best Media Itinerary Award
JoyRide Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Tourism Agency
Andrew McCarthy, travel writer and director, found this an easy call to judge due to the passion shown by Nova Scotia. “It passed the litmus test of what these kind of itineraries should do,” noted McCarthy. “It made me want to go.”
