Mega meetings and hosted buyer event in Spain provides perfect end to productive year.
If every picture tells a story, then having more than 100 must mean you have some great tales to tell. The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) ensured that attendees at this year’s Brand Canada Library to stir attendee imaginations, while the other main entrance was converted into a “Chinese gate” of two colossal Canada images.
EIBTM is an annual top-rank global event for meetings, convention and incentive travel (MC&IT) peeps, pulling in high-level attendees from around the world. This year’s iteration at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via and Montjuïc 2 exhibition centre Nov. 29-Dec. 1 did not disappoint, with 14,000-plus attendees. Of those, more than 3,800 were international hosted buyers, trade reps and media, while there were 6,000 (and counting) exhibitors from more than 90 countries.
The CTC had 28 partners (including tourism destinations, hotels, conventions centres and visitor bureaux) in this dynamic environment, one built on business and informal networking events as well as professional education programs. The theme at the Canada booth, enlarged to accommodate all the hosted buyers and pre-scheduled appointments, was culinary: “Find your flavour in Canada.” Executive Chef Blair Rasmussen from the Vancouver Convention Centre, BC, provided hands-on expertise, rustling up tasty Canadian treats such as salmon mousse, beef carpaccio with goat cheese and maple-syrup sorbet.
The culinary concept was extended to a Canada Night at Palau Moxó, where 100 invited guests enjoyed more relaxed networking and the chance to snaffle a gourmet giveaway: the winner of a prize draw collected a Canadian-themed dinner for six, cooked by a top chef at his or her home anywhere in the world. CTC’s team at EIBTM was led by Michele Saran, executive director, MC&IT, Susan Frei, director, International Meetings & Incentives, and Heather Phelps, director, International MC&IT Partnerships.
Mark your calendars for next year: EIBTM will take place Nov. 27-29, 2012 in Barcelona.
In other MC&IT news, Sandi Galloway, CTC director, Southwest MC&IT Sales Development in the US, received the DFW Spirit Award from the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of Meeting Professionals International this past October. The award came for her creation and delivery of the 2011 Camp Wisdom retreat. Her fellow committee members also received certificates for their contribution.
