Business Events Canada team makes impact at huge German meetings, events and incentive travel show, while Speaker Series delivers thought leadership in North America.

The meetings, conventions and incentive-travel arena is intensely competitive around the world. Canada is seen as one of the big hitters, largely due to the work of the Business Events Canada (BEC) team and its strategic partners. Here’s a glimpse of some of their latest projects.
Flying the flag: IMEX in Frankfurt, Germany, is one of the landmark events in the meetings-industry calendar each year. BEC teamed up with 31 Canadian industry partners at the Canada stand at Messe Frankfurt May 19-21, where reps from 3,500 companies from 150-plus countries had more than 65,000 appointments with just under 4,000 hosted buyers. The Canada stand hummed with activity, with the BEC team taking more than 500 appointments over the three days. Another highlight was the 5th Annual Vision Awards at Schloss Höchst, where BEC hosted 60 international guests and partners, plus a performance by Métis singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume. Cue drum roll, this year’s winners were: International Customer of the Year Award (sponsored by Ottawa Tourism)—One Young World; Partner Organization of the Year (sponsored by Tourism Toronto)—KES International; Media Partner of the Year (sponsored by Tourism Vancouver)—Mash Media. As part of the buildup to the big show in Frankfurt, Jon Mamela, Destination Canada senior vice-president Marketing Strategy/Chief Marketing Officer, took part in the 2015 Politicians Forum, joining other high-level government officials for discussions around destination brands and hosting events.
Words of wisdom: The Business Events Canada team continued its influential Speaker Series with events in Seattle, WA, Chicago, IL, Princeton, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, and Boston, MA, this past spring. Around 200 leading clients came to hear more about Canada’s “Beauty and Brains” from Cameron Herold: Canada’s entrepreneur spirit—building successful businesses & corporate culture; Dr. Dave Williams: The positive economic impact and achievements of space exploration and research (i.e. the Canada arm) and leadership; Kevin O’Leary: Savvy advice on starting a business, insider secrets from “Dragon’s Den” and “Shark Tank,” world economics and Canada as a leader; Dr. Joseph Cafazzo: Technology to improve healthcare and patient outcomes from the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation in Toronto. Around 50 Canadian partners helped the BEC team make these events a success.
Follow the leader: BEC stood proud at the ASAE Executive Leadership Forum in Ottawa, ON. Working alongside six strategic Canadian partners, the team put Canada front and centre for more than 100 association CEOs and senior staff at this exclusive retreat June 11-12, held at the iconic Fairmont Château Laurier. BEC also brought Dr. Kimberley Amirault to give a motivational talk on teaching leaders to lead.
Working together: BEC and partners formed the perfect team at Collaborate Marketplace in Orlando, FL, June 11-13. The marketplace brings together leading suppliers and experts in corporate, incentive and citywide meetings and events. With more than 400 buyers to choose from, each supplier had 40 qualified appointments over an intensive two days of networking. The Canada team hosted a reception during registration on day one, offering buyers Roots cabin socks, Skoah travel kits or an HBC tote—plus pints of Moosehead. Cheers to collaboration!
