May 26, 2015: In its 2014 Country RepTrak™ report the Reputation Institute concluded that Canada was the top country in the World for hosting or participating in meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, as well as a premier location to visit, live and study. With a raft of new products coming online, including a stunning new convention centre in Halifax set to offer more than 120,000 square feet of flexible event space (2017), and Calgary alone adding a further 3,000 hotel rooms by the end of 2017, the country’s MICE industry continues to go from strength to strength.
Meanwhile, Canada’s expertise in Life Sciences sectors such as pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and research and development (R&D) is so renowned that the 10 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world all have operations in the country. These companies are attracted by the world-class infrastructure, including 17 medical schools and more than 100 teaching hospitals, and the highly-skilled workforce which includes a local community of over 30,000 researchers.
Hotbeds for Life Sciences include the cities of Montréal, Waterloo, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver and key areas of expertise include the medical device industry. More than 1,000 companies in Canada work in this sector alone, employing a workforce of 26,000, and the country ranks fourth in medical device manufacturing costs after the UK, Netherlands and France.
Michele Saran, Executive Director, Business Events Canada (BEC), believes the country is uniquely placed to host Life Sciences events and cater to the exacting needs of such client groups.
“Here at BEC we like to think that what sets Canada apart for hosting MICE programs from the Life Sciences industry is our unique blend of Beauty and Brains,” she explains. “While our global standing at the vanguard of Life Sciences means we truly understand the needs and requirements of our clients. Our world-class facilities, from purpose-built convention centres in cosmopolitan urban centres to intimate wilderness lodges set against the stunning backdrop of the great outdoors, enables us to deliver on the promise of a successful program in a way no other destination can. All of these facts make Canada a ‘home away from home’ for executives, delegates and academics within the Life Sciences arena attending events in the country.”
She adds: “Whether you’re looking for speakers to engage for an event, potential sites for delegates to tour such as hospitals or cutting edge research facilities or ideas for unforgettable group excursions and incentives our specialist teams here at BEC and our partner organizations are on hand to cater to your needs and ensure your event goes off without a hitch. It’s also incredibly quick and easy to get to Canada from Europe with a great choice of airlift and the flight times are often shorter than you think, with London to St. John’s, for example, taking just over five hours.”
Notable recent conference wins from European firms operating in the Life Sciences arena include EMD Millipore, the Life Science business of Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany which held their Global Sales Meeting (GSM) 2015 in Toronto.
